Dig Experience

People use tools in a simulated outdoor dig.

Experience the thrill of excavation, just like a palaeontologist, in this simulated outdoor dig.


Please Note:

  • Children under 12 MUST be accompanied by a paid adult registered in the program.
  • Participants must be at least 5 years old, due to the age-specific program content, the hiking distance, and the use of tools. 
  • The 1.5 km hike to the simulated dig site follows narrow, uneven dirt trails. There is a rope rail along the steepest slope.
  • With slopes up to 35 degrees, the trail is not accessible for wheeled mobility devices or strollers.
  • The activity involves crouching or sitting on the ground for up to 30 minutes. Kneeling pads are provided.
  • The activity involves the use of handheld tools. Digging can be messy and dusty, and there are no washing facilities available during the program. Eye protection is provided and required when digging.
  • Participants must wear sturdy outdoor footwear, and bring water. 
  • Participants are strongly encouraged to wear hats and use sunscreen. Umbrellas are provided.
  • In inclement weather, an indoor version of the program will be offered.

Summer in Alberta's badlands can be very hot, often reaching 30°C. However, cool, cloudy, windy, and rainy days are possible. Bring clothing suitable for a range of conditions, including:



Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots (flip flops, sandals, etc. are not permitted on hikes)

A water bottle (mandatory on outdoor programs when the temperature is over 28°C)
